Black Men at Harvard Salute Black Women #ThankYouBlackWomen

By on April 4, 2017

Awww, tears! A group of black men at Harvard University share a special tribute to black women in this touching video. The video also features some of the black women being celebrated. This goes all out to all the sisters no matter the complexion, size or height.

Watch the amazing tribute here:

More about the video straight from the director’s heart:

The Harvard: #ThankYouBlackWomen project/campaign shines a spotlight on black women and the value that they hold in our society. In a society where blackness is often regarded as a badge of shame or stamp of inferiority, this project aims to remind black queens around the world like my mother, my sister, and the black women at Harvard of how beautiful and important they are regardless of skin tone, hair texture, or body type. There is often a focus on the struggles of black men in society and the plight of the black woman is neglected. This project was designed to be an open letter to black women thanking them for all that they’ve done to help black men like me grow and learn in this world. The men featured in the video wrote their own thoughts and it was compiled into a letter style montage. We chose black women at Harvard to be spotlighted in this tribute, but the overall message of appreciation and respect that this project puts forth is a message that should extend beyond this campus.

I wanted this project to be a candid outpouring of love from black men to black women because black women really function as the backbone of our community and inspiration. I am who I am because of the strong black women who surrounded and supported me and I asked black men who share this same sentiment to take part in the project.

I acknowledge my own privilege in directing this project in that I will never know what it feels like to be told that your natural hair is inappropriate for the workplace or that your confidence and boldness make you seem so angry. Black women have a unique experience in society, being both Black and a woman. Being a Black woman demands that you fight a simultaneous struggle against racism, sexism, and Eurocentric beauty standards. Black women are consistently told how they should behave and think. This affirmation project seeks to shut down the unfavorable narratives and stereotypes about black women and, instead, celebrates the complexity of black womanhood.

This project seeks to empower and embolden black women to be unapologetic and encourages black men to unashamedly support and celebrate black women. Thank you to everyone who was involved in this project and I hope that those of you who view it can share in my goal to uplift black women and spread a message of positivity and community love.

This project is dedicated to my mother and father, my little sister, my aunts, Dr. Stephanie Pinder-Amaker, Ms. Chatman, and all the beautiful black queens across the globe. – Zena Edosomwan

Welcome to Sweeter Juice Beauty – The Blog!

By on November 28, 2016

Hey Beauty! Welcome to the new site 🙂 On this site I hope to celebrate women of deeper melanin. Why? Because we are beautiful, smart, courageous, and many of us are God-fearing. We have been left out of the beauty standard for too long – now it’s time to create our own. In reality, we are clearly beautiful and our features are much to be desired. However,  often times we are the forgotten ones in most industries. Or we are the ones left out or put last. Nude shades never match us. Bare skin always means something lighter than us. Normal hair categories definitely aren’t for my normal, God-given, natural hair type! Makeup brands barely think of us (that’s changing though!) And I’m still waiting for a product that can truly keep my natural 4b/4c hair defined with its natural curly/coily texture without drying out and shrinking in 10 minutes (another look I can go for too).

So here on sweeterjuicebeauty.com, I will share melanin-rich beauty goals, make-up, skin care and hair tips and goals, inspiring stories, success stories and beautiful love stories.  So sit back and relax. Oh wait; share your stories, photos, inspiration and favorite products with us too!

Be blessed! – Sweeter Juice Beauty
